Early Morning, transfer to Tribhuvan Domestic Aiprort and fly 30-40 minutes turbulent mountain flight from Kathmandu (TIA) to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary airport). Lukla airport is the highest airport in Nepal and also one of the most dangerous airstrips in the world with just a single runway over a cliff.
The journey to the Himalayas begins after paying fees and registering at Lukla Tourism Check point. The trail then formally commences entering through Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Memorial gate. As the trail drops down to Thalsaroa and Cheplung, the spectacular vista of surging Dudhkoshi river roar at the trekkers to accomplish the journey. From Cheplung, the trail crosses through suspension bridge over Thado Khola and offers the introductory mountain view of Mt Khumbila (5,761m) before reaching at Ghat. The trail continues to the first stop of the trek Phakding offering spectacular demonstration of the 500nyears old monastery, prayer wheels, mantras painted Mani stones and gompas. After few hours of inclined walk from Ghar, the trail halts at Phakding where the trekkers take shelter on the first day.
Notice: Due to the fluctuate climate in the Himalayas, Kathmandu-Lukla or Lukla-Kathmandu flight may get delayed for one or two hours or even a day or two. Sorry for the inconvenience!
After warm breakfast, our 2nd day trek commences from Phakding. The route to Namche is so enchanting though it is a long and tiring walk. The trail from Phakding leads to various Sherpa villages: Rimijung, Zamfute, Benkar and Chhamuwa which offers serene beauty in the Himalayan region. Register your TIMS card at Chhamuwa and climb through the magnificent forest of rhododendron, fir and Mongolia trees until you arrive at the boarder of Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo village. Submit your TIMS card and National park entry card for the permission of EBC trek. From Monjo, the trial advances through Tenzing-Hillary suspension bridge over Dudh-Koshi river in Jhorsale village which is the confluence of Dudh-Koshi and Bhote-Koshi rivers. The trek concludes at Namche, the largest tourist hub in Everest region. Namche has all the amenities to spend the night at fully accommodated hotel.
The trek continues in the early morning after delicious breakfast at Namche. From Namche, the trail ascends uphill for few hours through dense juniper forest and Sherpa village Kyangjuma and reaches at Sanasa; the fork from where the trail departs to Gokyo lake on left and Everest Base Camp on your right.
The trail afterward offers the glorious view of towering peaks Ama Dablam while descending down to the villages: Lawichasa and Tashinga via dense juniper forest. Then, the trail steps downward to Phunki Thanga; a beautiful village which offers the magnificent view of clustered houses beside Dudh Koshi river, hermitages, army barrack, water driven prayer wheel and green hills under blue canopy.
Walking through the dense and tall rhododendron forest and suspension bridges for about 2 hours from Phunki Thanga, you reach at Tengboche. The village has the largest sacred Gompa (monastery) of this region, Tengboche Gompa. The Gompa is spiritually and historically importance; hence, it was renovated several times after being hit by earthquakes. This Gompa is still lively and perform longest festival of Khumbu region, Mani Rimdu festival in the month of October-November. Enjoy the night at lodge at Tengboche.
From Tengboche, the trail follows the stone paved path to reach at Debuche. Visit Debuche Nunnery for the spectacular glimpse of Thanka paintings, Mural paintings and architectural delicacy.
The trail then traces towards the junction of Pangboche through the dense forest and suspension bridges over the surging Imja river. From here, trial follows the arid landscape and boulders with the closer view of erected Ama Dablam Peak (6856m) and finally comes across the flat trail ahead Orso. Walking uphill from Orso along Imja river offers the pristine view of the Himalayas which inspires trekkers to continue the journey to Dengbouche.
For tourists, ‘The summer valley’, Dengbouche is the ideal stop for night stay and acclimatization.
After breakfast at Dengboche, the trail follows though rocky boulders to Dusa and inclines along the ridge to Dughla village. The ridge offers the fantastic view of countless peaks: Taboche (6,542m), Cholatse (6,440m), Ama Dablam (6,856m), Pumori (7,161m), Khumbutse (6,636) and Lhotse (8,516m) which makes the strenuous trail easy and painless.
From Dughla, the trail traces along the moraine glacial formed by Khumbu glacial. On the way are many tea shops which are purposefully built to offer rest and closeup view of the Awi Peak (5,245m). Henceforth, the next stop Lobuche is just few minutes away. Overnight, stay at lodge at Lobuche.
The concluding trial to Everest Base Camp traces from Lobuche through narrow mountain gaps, glacial moraine alongside the world’s highest glacier, Khumbu glacier. As the trial elevated further higher, some may feel symptoms of AMS like nuisance, vomiting and mild headache. Walk slowly but steadily to avoid AMS.
After walking for 2-3 hours through rocky path, we get at the last human settlement, Gorakshep. The climate of the village is too cold as it is located at the elevation of 5,164 m. Gorakshep is the fork from where the path separates to Kalapatthar and EBC. Only physically fit trekkers can ascend and descend Kala Patthar on the same day while other trekkers keep the hike to Kala Patthar for next day.
The trail from here now is full of sand pit and boulders which makes the trek more strenuous. Never lose hope! Be motivated! The best moment of your life is awaiting you at a few distance. It takes 2-3 hours to reach at the destination, Everest Base Camp. Once the trail meets at the Base camp (5,364m), all the pain will be faded away by the tranquil scenery of Khumbu ice fall and sparkling view of Nuptse. Kudos For your achievement. Relieve the moment, pose for the photo, take rest and get saturated before heading to Gorakshep. There are limited Lodges at Gorakshep so it is normal if the lodges are crowded in peak seasons.
Caution: Gorakshep is sandy and flat village. So, don’t forget to carry the gears like sunglasses, hat and thin scarf to protect yourself from strong icy breeze and sandy mud.
