More than 29 million Nepalese are divided into 125 ethnic groups in with their specific mother tongue. Each ethnic group have particular rites, rituals, costumes, culture and traditions.

In ancient times social strata on the basis of caste was done into 4 categories. Brahmin, Chhetri, Vaishya and Sutra.
