In the trek like Jiri – Everest Base Camp trek, the battery gets depleted due to long trek in extreme cold temperature in higher elevation. In such condition, we need to charge the battery continuously throughout the Everest Trails.

Can we charge the batteries at lodges? [Camera Battery Charging Access - Everest Base Camp Trek]

In Classic Everest Base Camp Trek, we trek through different villages for 12-15 days from Lukla to EBC. In most of the lodges of EBC Trails, there are facilities of everything including electricity; so we can charge the batteries in lodges.

In lower elevation like Lukla, Namche, Tengboche, and Dingboche, trekkers can charge the camera battery by paying some sort of money; but as we ascend higher to Dingboche, Pheriche, Lobuche and Gokarshep, there is no sufficient power supply at the lodges.

If you are trekking in peak seasons, there will be scarcity of power sockets to charge batteries due to high number of trekkers; so completely depending upon the lodges can become your biggest mistake while trekking to EBC. To keep the cameras’ battery last long in higher altitude, there are many alternatives for the trekkers.

While trekking in the Everest Region, there are many lodges where you can charge your batteries but all the lodges don’t have adequate power supplies; therefore, we recommend you to carry alternative solar charger to charge the battery anytime you needed. If you find the solar panel expensive then what about possessing some spare batteries?

In higher elevation, the battery gets drained in short time and you need to charge the battery time to time or battery mayn’t functions properly; in such condition, protect the batteries for longer time by using silver foil or any other method.

Beside carrying solar charger and spare batteries, you can also bring portable power supplies or power bank to keep charging the batteries. In few places, you can also find multistage charger to charge the batteries.

If you find Gokyo – Cho la – EBC Trek as better EBC Trek, you need to carry portable solar panel to charge the batteries; otherwise, you miss the opportunity to capture the breath-taking scenery and sparkling peaks.

Is it a good idea to carry camera in EBC Trek?

The Himalayan Region is naturally beautiful: Cerulean landscape, tantalizing peaks, off-beaten trails, traditional lifestyle, are the features of this region. Everest – Three Passes Trek offers the most awe-inspiring scenery. Trekking in this region has become a trend of spending vacations among the energetic youth.  To keep the memory everlasting, camera is an important accessories used by many people; so carrying camera in EBC is normal.

While trekking in the Everest Region, trekkers have confusion either to carry a camera or not. Walking on the off the beaten trail is not that easy; you need to carry light bag packs: If you carry highly professional camera and gears then you have to carry extra load.

We suggest the trekkers to use mobile camera to take pictures so that the trek will be comfortable and there will be no worries about charging the batteries. Carrying a small portable digital camera can also be better option. It is also okay if you want to posses DSLR for the quality pictures of the EBC Trek. But keep in mind to carry portable solar charger or few spare batteries rather depending on charger at lodges.

Some tips to the trekkers:

  • It is always wise idea to use mobile camera if you just want to capture the scene for future memory.
  • Always search for better alternative to heavy professional cameras like: small digital camera.
  • Carrying DSLR camera, its lenses, tripod, extra batteries and solar panel force you to carry heavy bag-pack in high altitude trek.
  • If you don’t have spare batteries then you have to rely on charger at lodges which is sometime very competitive due to large number of trekkers.
  • In most of the lodges you need to pay extra money to use the power socket.
  • If possible, manage spare batteries to use rather than depending on lodges’ charger.
  • To make the battery last longer, keep it warm or wrap it in silver foil.
  • Some solar panel can be cheaper than buying spare batteries; so do market research to purchase solar panel.

Conclusion:

Trekking in the Himalayas is an adventurous escapade which pleases the heart and soul of the trekkers till eternity. Many trekkers carry camera during the trek to capture the moment and serene scenery of the Everest Panoramic View Trek.

In cold temperature, the battery gets dried quickly therefore needed to be charged time to time. At the lodges in the trails, there is facility of charging by paying some amount; but sometime the power supplies become low and the power sockets will be less as other trekkers also have to charge batteries. MMT suggests the trekkers to carry spare batteries if possible; or carry portable solar charger to trek cheerfully.
