Nepal’s river systems fall into three categories as a result of the formation of its geography. Three major rivers: Karnali in the west; Narayani or Sapta-Gandaki in the centre and Sapta Kosi in the east are ancient rivers whose source is in Tibet or the high Himalaya and which managed to cut through the rising Mahabharat and Churia hills, gathering vast quantities of water from tributaries that finally flow into the Ganges. Shorter rivers flow from the hill regions, many linking to the major systems.
Nepal has sixteen White Water rafting/canoeing rivers of which six are easily accessible and regularly used. They range in difficulty from grades 2-5: grades 2 and 3 offer stretches of open water linked by rapids of manageable difficulty and suitable for people, including children, comfortable in water; grades 4 and 5 are for active people confident in water and preferably with some rafting experience.
From January – May the rivers are relatively low and ideal for families to raft or canoe. From September – December, following the monsoon, it is adrenaline time with high and fast flowing water for great adventures.
